چکیده

Starbug is a new concept for a robotic positioning system able to deploy many payloads, such as pickoff optics, optical fibres, integral field units over the focal surface of a telescope. Aimed at addressing some of the weakness of current positioning systems, Starbug employs micro-robotic actuators to independently and simultaneously position multiple small payloads accurately on an arbitrarily large field plate. Targeted at offering a cost-effective positioning system for both optical and infrared instrumentation it is being developed to; operate in cryogenic environments, position to micron level resolution, simultaneous move arbitrary numbers of payloads and included micro-tracking for minor positional adjustments that could compensate for differential atmospheric refraction effects and instrument flexure.

Deployable Payloads with Starbug

We explore the range of wide field multi-object instrument concepts taking advantage of the unique capabilities of the Starbug focal plane positioning concept. Advances to familiar instrument concepts, such as fiber positioners and deployable fiber-fed IFUs, are discussed along with image relays and deployable active sensors. We conceive deployable payloads as components of systems more traditi...

Starbug – A Smart Focal Plane technology for ELT instruments

Starbug is a robotic positioning development concept for deploying many payloads, such as pickoff optics, optical fibres, integral field units, to micron level accuracy over a flat or curved focal surface. With a heritage of fibre positioners such as 2dF, OzPoz and FMOS-Echidna, this concept addresses some of the limitations of other positioning systems to provide a reliable, cost effective way...

Arecibo 430 MHz Pulsar Polarimetry: Faraday Rotation Measures and Morphological Classifications

We have measured Faraday Rotation Measures (RM) at Arecibo Observatory for 36 pulsars, 17 of them new. We combine these and earlier measurements to study the galactic magnetic field and its possible temporal variations. Many RM values have changed significantly on several–year timescales, but these variations probably do not reflect interstellar magnetic field changes. By studying the distribut...

An Ultra Fast Image Generator (UFig) for wide-field astronomy

Simulated wide-field images are becoming an important part of observational astronomy, either to prepare for new surveys or to test measurement methods. In order to efficiently explore vast parameter spaces, the computational speed of simulation codes is a central requirement to their implementation. We introduce the Ultra Fast Image Generator (UFig) which aims to bring wide-field imaging simul...
